How a free gift gets inside a Recharge renewal
5 September 2026 · 5 minute read · The Reloop team
When Reloop decides a customer has earned a gift, something very specific happens in Recharge, and it is worth understanding exactly what, because the boring details are what make the whole thing safe.
The gift is a real product at a price of zero
Every gift in Reloop is linked to a product that already exists in your store. The whisk is a real whisk with a real product page and a real price for anyone who wants to buy one. Reloop never creates products, never edits them, and never changes a price.
Instead, it adds the gift to the customer's upcoming renewal as an extra line at a price of zero, pinned to the exact date of that renewal. When the renewal charges, the order that flows to your store and on to fulfilment contains the subscription product plus the gift, priced at nothing. Your warehouse packs what the order says. The gift rides along in the same box.
Pinned to a date, not to hope
Reloop pins each gift to the renewal's exact charge date rather than vaguely attaching it to whatever charge comes next. If the customer moves their renewal, the pin no longer matches, the gift is held, and Reloop reschedules it once the new date is confirmed. A customer who delays a month does not accidentally get their gift on the wrong order, and a customer who cancels does not get a gift at all.
Checked before, verified after
Immediately before writing anything, Reloop rechecks everything against live data: the subscription is still active, the renewal date still matches, the gift was not already added, the product link is still valid. Only then does it write, exactly once.
Immediately after, it reads the result back from Recharge and compares every field: the date, the product, the quantity, the zero price. Only when the readback matches does Reloop count the gift as added. If anything looks different, it stops and raises its hand rather than guessing.
The result is a system that has to prove a write was correct before it believes its own database, which is the standard you want from software that touches real customer orders.
